The program begins with summer session, continues through the fall and spring semesters, and concludes at the completion of the next summer session.
First Summer Session
- DFH 610 Colloquium in Documentary Film and History (1 credit) - Students view, discuss, and critique important documentary films and learn about their contributions.
- HST 802 Modes of Analysis in History (3 credits) - Students learn the various theoretical principles and methodological approaches to historical research.
- TRF 655 Television Practices (3 credits) - Students learn how stories are written and produced for the screen, and are introduced to digital recording and editing.
- DFH 610 Colloquium in Documentary Film and History (1 credit) The colloquium continues, with emphasis on proposal writing and preparation for the capstone project.
- TRF 527 Documentary Production (3 credits) Students learn and practice the crafts of documentary treatment writing, shooting, editing, and post-production.
- TRF 611 Dramatic Writing for Television and Film (3 credits) Students learn and practice the craft of screenwriting.
- ANT 682 Life Histories and other Personal Narratives (3 credits) OR HST 615 Oral History Workshop (3 credits) Both courses are designed to introduce students to the theory of oral history, the practice of oral history (including how to conduct interviews), and the reliability of oral histories as sources. Each course is taught from the perspective of its discipline.
- First History Elective Course (HST 500 or higher, 3 credits) Each student acquires specific knowledge of a chosen historical subject by enrolling in a graduate history course. For example, a student interested in 20th century history might choose HST 615: The World at War, 1914-1918, 1939-1945.
- DFH 610 Colloquium in Documentary Film and History (1 credit) The colloquium continues, with emphasis on the business of documentary filmmaking.
- DFH/HST 695 Historical Narratives and Interpretations (3 credits) In this crosslisted course, students examine six case studies of historical texts that have been brought to the screen.
- TRF 637 Communications Law (3 credits) The course offers students valuable information on the legal issues inherent in production and distribution of documentary films.
- Second History Elective Course (HST 500 or higher, 3 credits) Second opportunity to acquire specific knowledge of a chosen historical subject.
- TRF 600 Industry Practicum (3 credits)
- TRF 650 Advanced Practice: Special Projects (3 credits) Students complete their capstone projects.
